Benefits of House Additions

Added Living Space

One of the most obvious benefits of a residential addition is the additional living space it provides. Whether you’re adding a new bedroom, a larger kitchen, or a home office, a home addition can make your home feel more spacious and comfortable.

Improved Functionality

A house addition can also improve the functionality of your home. For example, if you frequently entertain guests, a kitchen or dining room addition can make hosting events more enjoyable. If you work from home, a home office addition can provide the privacy and quiet you need to be productive.

Increased Home Value

Home additions can also increase the value of your home. By adding square footage and improving functionality, you can make your home more marketable in the future.

Additional Source of Income

When you add on rooms to a house, you can rent out the new rooms in your home to earn extra money. This is especially common in popular tourist destinations like San Diego. In San Diego, there are also lots of opportunities to rent to college students.

Saving Money

Real estate is expensive in San Diego. Rather than renting space in a commercial building, many people decide to add a home office, studio, or salon. Depending on building and area codes, you can even have a separate entrance for customers.

Types of Home Additions

Room Additions

This is when you add a room to a house that has already been built. It is typically a full room rather than just an extension of an existing room.

Many people assume that sunrooms cost considerably less than regular home additions. But in San Diego, they require the same permits as typical room additions. During the building process, a sunroom is simply a home extension with more windows. For example, in this Rancho Bernardo home you can see how their sunroom has been framed out like a typical home addition.

Garage Conversions

This type of house addition involves converting an existing garage into a living space. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to add more living space to a home. This homeowner in Escondido was able to convert their garage into a full ADU.

Second-Story Additions

This involves adding a second story to an existing one-story home. The benefit is that you can potentially double your square footage without using up more lot space. We were able to add another room to this Rancho Peñasquitos home by including it in the second story.

Bump Out

Also known as a micro-addition, a bump out involves extending an existing room out a few feet. It allows you to increase usable space without the expense and complexity of a full addition. By extending a room outward, a bump-out can provide extra square footage for seating areas, dining spaces, or storage. This type of addition can also add natural light and improve the overall appearance of the room.

Master Bedroom Additions

Over the years, larger and more spacious master bedrooms have become popular. But not all homes, especially older homes, have a large master bedroom. Adding on to an existing bedroom can allow you to make more room for a walk-in closet, sitting area, and a master bathroom. You can see in this Clairemont home there is now room for two walk-in closets and a master bathroom.

Bathroom Additions

This type of addition is usually done to increase the number of bathrooms in a home or to add a bathroom to a part of the home where one does not currently exist. It can also be used to turn a regular-sized bathroom into a master bath, or a half bath into a full bath. This Clairemont home was able to add a soaking tub and a walk-in shower.

Guest Bedroom Additions

Guest bedroom additions are typically designed to provide comfortable and private accommodations for guests who are staying in the home. They can also be designed to be flexible spaces that can also be used for other purposes, such as a home office or a workout room.

Dining Room and Kitchen Additions

If you have a small kitchen and dining area, this kind of addition allows you to create a larger kitchen as well as more space to entertain guests. As many families grow larger, it can be challenging to fit everybody around the table. A dining room addition gives you more space to add a larger dining room table. This Rancho Bernardo kitchen went from tiny to spacious.

Home Office Additions

This type of home addition is common for people who are looking for a dedicated workspace in their homes. It is designed to provide a quiet and private space for working or studying, away from the distractions of the rest of the home. Home offices can be designed to accommodate office work, or they can be built for those who need a studio or salon.

How Much Does a House Addition Cost in San Diego?

The cost of a home addition can vary widely depending on several factors, including the size of the addition, the complexity of the project, and the materials used. For example, an addition that requires additional plumbing, changes to the roofline, or a lot of cabinetry will be more money than a simple room extension.

I originally had hired another contractor to create my set of plans and build my room addition. The design person that created the plans was having some trouble getting the city to okay the plans so i started to get worried and frustrated with the amount of time this was taking. That’s when I called TR construction and met Tony. He took my plans and with his design man easily set things in motion and got the permit to in order to begin my remodeling project. With Tony I completely expanded and remodeled my kitchen, added a bathroom and extended by bedroom. As promised Tony completed the project on time and on budget with first rate quality workmanship. I was extremely impressed with his office staff, his job site foreman and all crew members were professional on all levels. Tony never asked for money sooner than outlined on the payment schedule. He went above and beyond all my expectations and helped create the remodel of my dreams. This is a first rate company and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a dependable and reliable contractor.
